Hippo Zorg offers two different sickness insurance, which can be taken out as a supplement to the basic policy. It is not possible to take out a sickness insurance on its own. This can be done only in combination with a basic policy. It is therefore linked to the basic policy.
Link between the sickness insurance and the basic policy
The cover of the supplementary sickness insurance is linked to the selected basic policy.
This means that only medical expenses may be reimbursed for disorders which are also insured under the basic policy that has been taken out. If a disorder is not insured under the basic policy, we can therefore not cover medical expenses. Consequently, an examination in connection with lameness may be reimbursed only if you select an extended basic policy with a supplementary sickness insurance.
Limited or Comprehensive?
Our sickness insurance are designed to cover the two main forms of veterinary medicine for horses:
- First-line care, i.e. the general care that can be provided by any vet.
This type of care is not specialised, and in the vast majority of cases it is the first form of care that is requested. If the first-line vet cannot identify or treat your horse's problems, he will refer your horse to a specialist.
- The care that is provided by a specialist is referred to as second-line care.
This is less freely available, because not every vet has completed the procedures to be officially recognised as a specialist. In addition, in some cases it involves specialised equipment that not every vet will have. Almost all patients receiving second-line care are referred by the first-line vet for further examination or further treatment.
The comprehensive sickness insurance reimburses both first-line and second-line care. The limited sickness insurance reimburses only second-line care provided by named specialists after your vet has referred your horse.
