Your horse is rejected by your vet if there is no longer any possibility of recovery. Important note: This does not concern negative advice concerning a purchase or sale ("rejection" for sale/purchase).
We will not accept rejection by yourself, by the farrier, by a physiotherapist or, for example, by a homeopath. If you are in any doubt, please contact us for advice. In order to be able to assess your claim, we will require the rejection declaration issued by your vet, along with the available X-rays, ultrasound images and/or any other relevant documents.
Upon receipt, we will assess the claim. If we accept the rejection of your horse, we will contact you to discuss any other arrangements.
Possibilities after rejection
If we accept the rejection of your horse, we will discuss with you what is to become of your horse. We will offer a number of possibilities. These are, in short:
- Destruction of the horse (possibly under supervision)
- Euthanasia by the vet
- Keeping your horse to allow it to live out its final years
You take the final decision.
Destruction
This is also referred to as "transfer" with regard to your horse.
We use the services of a Dutch company, which means we are able to guarantee a swift and reliable service anywhere in Belgium. We guarantee that they will handle this difficult and often emotional matter in a proper professional manner with due consideration for the persons and animals involved.
They will contact you to make an appointment to collect the horse at your convenience.
Once your horse has been collected by our partner company, they will inform us. We will then terminate the policy and pay you the set amount of compensation. You will in all cases receive written notification.
Euthanasia
You can (after consultation with us) make your own arrangements for your horse to be euthanised by a vet of your choice. Upon receipt of a euthanasia declaration from your vet, we will pay the compensation.
In this case, we calculate a residual value that is deducted from the compensation, because we may receive payment in the event of the death of your horse. This residual value is compensation for this. The residual value is calculated individually by Hippo Zorg.
We will not reimburse the cost of the euthanasia and disposal of your horse.
Keeping your horse
In the past it was standard practice that horses would all be collected and destroyed by the insurance company. The buy-back scheme was developed (in addition to the possibility of euthanasia) for customers who were unwilling to accept this arrangement.
We will make this arrangement with you if your horse is permanently disabled. You can receive compensation for this, but you still may want to keep your horse, for example to allow it to live out its final years.
There are certain simple conditions. For example, your horse can no longer be entered in competitions and your horse can no longer be sold, which in our view goes without saying for a horse that has been rejected.
As the name suggests, you buy your horse back from us on paper. In this case, therefore, we calculate a residual value that is deducted from the compensation. The residual value is calculated individually by Hippo Zorg.
Whether you feel this is appropriate for you depends on your horse's circumstances. Needless to say, we can offer the buy-back option only if the horse's condition allows and its well-being is not too adversely affected.
Payments on the basic policy
The payment on the basic policy is made if your horse is declared permanently disabled due to a covered cause. This payment is based on the insured value of your horse. In the case of permanent disability of your horse, the payment amounts to 90%. Depending on the circumstances, a residual value may be deducted.
